Jeep Takes a Shot at Larger Electric Vehicles too

If you frequent the blog, then you may recall our previous post about an all-electric variant of the Ram 1500. This is something that we're quite excited for, as it sets the precedent for larger electric vehicles. And apparently, the people at Jeep have caught electric fever too, as they've recently unveiled an electric version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The vehicle was on display at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, and it was created with the help of Amp, an Ohio-based company. The Jeep Grand Cherokee EV is exciting because in a world where many automakers are stripping features and downgrading, the American automaker is opting to try and pack every pit of performance that you'll find in the regular Grand Cherokee into its EV variant.

More specifically, it packs a lithium-ion phosphate battery pack paired with a two Remy AC motors under the hood. This combination works to deliver an impressive 0-60 sprint of less than 10 seconds, as well as a total driving range of 80-100 miles on a charge. The only big downside right now is that the vehicle is only a front-wheel drive model. Jeep has, however, said that it plans to try and make a four-wheel drive variant in the future.

When will this electric SUV be available for a test drive? Not in the near future. So far, Jeep and Amp have only managed to make one of them! The company plans to sell a small range of vehicles to professional fleets to gauge interest and use, similar to how Ram is handling their electric truck. From there, it's likely that we'll see a limited public release at dealerships like ours at 2633 West Liberty Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15216.

One thing that this new models does have us wondering, however, is just what kind of other all-electric Jeeps could we be seeing in the near future? For instance, what if Jeep electrified the Jeep Compass? or what about the Wrangler? Maybe the Liberty? We'd be up for seeing plug-in variants of any of these!
